Old City Directories Search
City directories were published before the modern phone book, many times on an annual basis. Cities and towns published these alphabetical directories of their residents. The city directories contain lists of names and addresses of most adults and businesses in the town. They often contain the names of husband and wife with both home and business address.
City directories show spouses no longer living, such "Powers, Ellen, widow of Patrick." Using city directories and checking year by year, it is possible to pinpoint the year of death of the husband.
