An important search hint as you begin to search for your ancestors online is to spell the word Genealogy correctly. The correct spelling of genealogy is geneAlogy with an "A".   An easy way to remember is "A" for "Ancestor".

If you are using a search engine such as Google for your ancestor searches, it will looks for words on webpages with exact matches to the keywords you enter, even if you misspell the word. Search for geneology or another misspelling and you will only find webpages that have also spelled the word incorrectly, most likely miss the webpage that you are looking for.

Common mispellings are geneology, geaneology, geanealogy, geneaology, genelogy, geneaolgy, geaneolgy, geniology, genology, genalogy, geneaoly, geneolegy, genaology, geanology, geneolgy, genalogy, genelolgy, genalogy, geneaoly, genelagy, geneolagy and genealodgy.

Other words to watch for spelling using search engines are AnsestOr commonly misspelled as Ancestor, ansester, or ansestor; and ancestry is often misspelled ancestory and Ancestory.
