Colonel Ben AYCRIGG Biography

Colonel Ben Aycrigg was a Civil Engineer. He was Chief En- gineer when the Union Canal was made from Pine Grove to the Water Works connecting with the canal from Middletown to Reading. He was a bachelor and had bought some land at Mifflin, now called Suedberg, which was to be the head of the canal, the plan being to make the railroad to the mines from Suedberg up to the High Bridge through De Hass Swamp to Lorberry and Suedberg would thus be the shipping point. He bought the land where the Suedberg station and hotel now stand and the farm that Wagner owns now. With the intention of making money in selling lots he held this a good many years afterwards but sold it at a loss.

The last time I saw the Col. was when the Pine Grove Company left for Harrisburg under the call for 75,000 men. He was visiting here at the time and went along to Harrisburg.
