Francis Bailey Biography

Francis P. Bailey, banker, Erie, was born in Pelham, Mass., Nov. 26, 1820, son of Rev. Winthrop and Martha (Stanwood) Bailey, former a minister of the Unitarian Church, native of Mass., latter of Me. They were parents of 8 children.

Our subject received his education in Deerfield Academy, of which his father was Principal at the time of his death in 1835.

On leaving school at the age of fifteen, Mr. Bailey was employed for several years as clerk in a general store, and was a partner in the printing business 2 years before coming to Erie in 1850.

He was then engaged as book-keeper for a foundry firm for a time; he also acted in the same capacity in Williams & Wright's Bank in 1852; in 1853, became a partner in that institution, and the style of firm became C. B. Wright & Co. This terminated in 1858, and Mr. Bailey, in 1860, became a partner of the firm of Vincent, Bailey & Co., which continued 5 years, when the business merged into the Marine National Bank, of which he has since been manager.

Mr. Bailey was married, in Jamestown, N. Y., to Caroline Pier, who died in 1859. In 1861, he married Martha E. Pier. He has 3 children living.
