Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, 1912



Burd Family Biography



The Burds of Western Pennsylvania descend from Edward and Jane (Haliberton) Burd, of Armiston near Edinburg, Scotland. (II) Colonel James Burd, son of Edward Burd, born in 1726, came to Pennsylvania in 1747 or 1748, and died at Tinian near Highspire, Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, October 5, 1793. He was a prominent man in the early history; was colonel in 1760, having been in the provincial service since 1755, forts and roads in Western Pennsylvania bearing his name. He did not serve in the revolution, after heartily entering into the contest, as a dispute arose concerning rank and an act of insubordination in his command and some criticism from the "Committee of Safety" caused him to resign. At the time of his death he was county judge. He married, May 14, 1748, Sarah Sheppen, born February 22, 1730, at Philadelphia, died September 17, 1784, daughter of Edward and Sarah (Plumley) Sheppen.

(III) Joseph, son of Colonel James Burd. was born at Tinian, Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, January 8, 1768, died in Juniata county, Pennsylvania. He marired (first) Catherine Cochran, (second) Harriet Bailey, and left issue. It is believed William Burd, of Somerset county, the progenitor of the Burds of Brownsville, Pennsylvania, was a son of Joseph and Catherine Burd.

(IV) William, son of Joseph Burd, was born February 27, 1790. He was a resident of Somerset county, Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Clark, born March 26, 1794, died November 19, 1837. They left male issue.

(V) Solomon, son of William Burd, was born May 16, 1814, died May 15, 1892. He married Sarah Ann Cox, born November 10, 1816, in Maryland, died January 26, 1853. Children: John, William, Isaac Linn, of whom further; Keziah, Michael, Brubaker, Sarah.

(VI) Isaac Linn, son of Solomon Burd, was born in Brownsville township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, October 13, 1842, died February 2, 1887. He was educated in the public schools, and learned the trade of butcher. He was engaged in that business in Brownsville for the last twenty years of his life. He was a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He belonged to Trumpet Lodge. Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Brownsville, and was always an active, useful citizen. He married Nancy J. Fitzgerald, born in South Brownsville township, March 29, 1842, died September 26, 1901, daughter of Jesse and Margaret (McDonald) Fitzgerald, who came to Fayette county at an carly day. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald : Rebecca, Amy, Nancy J. of previous mention; Matilda, Ella, Emma, Mary, James. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Burd; Ida B., now living at the old home in Brownsville; John; Eva, married Frank Gable, of Brownsville, Pennsylvania; Maud, married Jesse K. Coney, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Margaret, married E. T. Brashear, of Uniontown; Harry Martin, of whom further.

(VII) Harry Martin, youngest child of Isaac Linn and Nancy J. (Fitzgerald) Burd, was born in Faytte county, Pennsylvania, May 17, 1877. He was educated in the public schools, and at age of eighteen years began learning the blacksmith's trade. Alter completing his years of apprenticeship he continued as a journeyman, and has heen for the past eight years in the employ of the Monongahela Railroad Company as blacksmith. He is a Democrat in politics, and a Methodist in religious faith, his wife being also a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. His fraternal orders are: Brownsville Lodge, No. 51, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Maccabees, No. 325. He married, September 23, 1903, Anna Baird, born near Fairchance, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, January 15, 1877, daugter of Edward Ridgway and Jane E. (Mitchell) Baird. Edward R. Baird was born near Morgantown, West Virginia, January 6, 1856, his wife near Fairchance, Pennsylvania, 1858. He is a son of David Baird, who came to Fayette county at an early day. Jane E. Mitchell was a daughter of Ellis and Hannah (Ramage) Mitchell, the latter still living. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Baird : Elizabeth, deceased; Anna, wife of Harry Martin Burd; Harry, of West Brownsville, Pennsylvania; Grace; Edith, Bertha and Ray, of South Brownsville.
