Edel Family Biography

The Edel family of South Brownsville, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, descend from ancestors long seated in France, where George Edel lived and died aged sixty-eight years. He was born in the town of Kierweiler, France, in 1802, married Margaret Burger, born 1804, died at the age of fifty-one years, and left issue including a son George, of whom further.

(II) George (2), son of George (1) Edel, was born in Kierweiler, France, December 17, 1840. He was finely educated, being a graduate of the University, and later came to the United States, settling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He entered the employ of Peter Troutman, whose plant stood on part of the present town of Homestead; later he was in the employ of Henry Wilhelm, a brewer of Pittsburgh, south side. He became thoroughly familiar with the business, and about 1885 organized the Edel & Seifert Brewing Company, continuing in business in Pittsburgh until May, 1889. He then went to Canton, Ohio, and established the Union Brewing Company, later merged with the Canton Brewing Company, Mr. Edel becoming president of the consolidated companies. He later organized the Stark-Tuscarawas Brewing Company, of which he is a director and chairman of the executive board. He is also a director of the Brownsville (Pennsylvania) Brewing Company; director of the Canton Brick Company; director of the Canton Provision Company; director of the News-Democrat Publishing Company; director of the Ohio Volks Zeitung Publishing Company; director of the Canton Fertilizer Works, and vice-president of the Shull Steel Casting Company. He is an influential, energetic man of affairs, and deeply interested in the development and upbuilding of Canton as a business centre. He is a Republican in polities, and a member of the Lutheran church, as is his wife.

He married, May 14, 1871, Louisa Hoffman, born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, May 21, 1849, daughter of Michael and Catherine (Bopp) Hoffman, Children: George J., of whom further; Emma, born May 15, 1875; John M., July 29, 1878; Otto F., March 17, 1880; Harry A., of whom further; Nellie K., September 29, 1885; Clara A., September 27, 1888; Alma K., September 21, 1890, born at Canton, Ohio, The first seven children were born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

(III) George J., eldest son of George (2) Edel, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, December 5, 1872. He was educated in the public schools, Duff's Business College of that city, and the American Brewers Academy of Chicago. He was with his father in Canton, Ohio, until 1882, when he returned to Pittsburgh, entering the employ of the Eberhardt & Ober Brewing Company, remaining nearly three years, when he went to Chicago, Illinois, being employed with the J. Weil Malting Company and the Fond du Lac Malting Grain Company. He then returned to Pittsburgh with the Phoenix Brewing Company, leaving that company to enter the employ of the Pfaudler Vacuum Fermentation Company of Rochester, New York, as traveling mechanical enginer and brew master. He was next with the Charleroi Brewing Company as general manager, remaining five years, until 1903, when he organized the Brownsville Brewing Company, of which he is president and general manager. He was superintendent of the erection of the plant, which is of the best modern construction. Later he organized the Brownsville Ice Company, of which he is superintendent and member of the board of directors. He is master of his business and an energetic, capable executive officer. He is a Republican in polities, but never sought public office. He is a member of the Lutheran church; Charleroi Lodge, No. 494 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and Brownsville Lodge, No. 1356, Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He married, December 20, 1899. Euphemia Stephenson, born in England, May 18, 1878, daughter of John and Jane (Douglas) Stephenson, both born in England, coming to the United States in 1880, settling in Washington county, Pennsylvania, now residing in Charleroi. He is a coal miner, Children: George, born November 20, 1900; John George, April 28, 1904, died December 26, 1909; William Henry, June 23, 1910.

(III) Harry A., son of George (2) Edel, was born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, February 27, 1883. He was six years of age when his parents moved to Canton, Ohio, where he attended the public school and Canton Actual Business College. He began business life as a messenger boy for the Savings & Loan Company of Canton, and was promoted for efficient service until he became assistant cashier. On April 25, 1904, he came to Brownsville as bookkeeper for the Brownsville Brewing Company, of which he is now the efficient secretary and treasurer. He is a Republican in politics, and a member of Charleroi Lodge, No. 494, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, also of Brownsville Lodge No. 1356, Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He married, September 13, 1905, Marie Zurcher, born in Canton, Ohio, July 26, 1882, daughter of Huldreich and Marie (Houmenouk) Zurcher. Her father was born in Switzerland in 1855; her mother in France in 1860. They were married in Switzerland, and in 1881 settled in Canton, Ohio. He was a boiler maker. Children of Mr. and Mrs. Edel : Harry H., born July 23, 1906; Marie Louise, September 23, 1908; Lucy Ann, August 23, 1910.
