*A soundex search is a way of searching for a surname the way it is pronounced, rather than the way it is spelled. Using a soundex search is a way of expanding your search to include possible transcription errors or census enumerator spelling variations. **The Miracode index uses the same phonetic code and abbreviations as the Soundex index, but the method of recording the census page reference is different. The Miracode index card lists county, volume, ED, and the sequential family number assigned by the census taker, whereas the Soundex index shows the county, volume, ED, sheet, and line numbers. ***The 1790 through the 1840 census enumerate only the head of household.
